university union email blocking

hc's picture

I just noticed this story of a university blocking union email.
There needs to be a way to test this. Maybe email blocking is
widespread and we don't know it. (Eg a site where a university
employee can click on something and get an email sent to him/her
from the appropriate union domain.)

"Last fall, NSU students were barred from distributing pro-union leaflets. A source at the student newspaper said Wednesday that the administration barred the paper from selling ads to SEIU. Meanwhile, the university, unlike UM, abruptly changed janitorial contractors and about 100 would-be union janitors lost their jobs.

Then came the Putinesque e-mail crackdown. University spokesman Dave Dawson said Wednesday that the university was blocking ''e-mail from outside groups that would jeopardize or disrupt our educational mission.'' He added that mass e-mails from an outside group, like the union, might overload NSU's computer system.

NSU's only real accomplishment was insulting faculty and students, winning sympathy for the union and resurrecting a 1970s notion that the mostly commuter school isn't quite a real university.

A real university, after all, doesn't fear communication."

NSU & email blocking (and union busting)

It is great to visit COD and see this article posting about Nova. I have watched the struggle there from day 1, and it is not pretty at all. At Union Review I also posted about the article that you mention, but my take was attacking the journalist for siding more with the university (though that is the norm). The Union Review piece is here: http://unionreview.com/nova-southeastern-university-can-t-get-break-miam...

What is intense about this issue with Nova is that the only faculty who are union are the law professors, but they are not standing up in support or solidarity for the janitors. They are only quoted as being disappointed that the university is censoring their emails.

Why is censoring such a shock from this university, I don't know. They busted the union, fired the most active organizers (more than 100 workers remain unemployed), and have carried on in such a way that many pro-union folks here in South Florida have wondered why there was no sound of support from the rest of the country; alas another story.

In the end, it would be great to have the technology in place to test whether there are blocks on emails. I will ask around and see what I can find out.
