Comments

It would be better if Recent Comments was featured a little higher up. Plus it needs to lose the exact time that it was published, maybe totally lose the time, and add who posted it. Me thinks. :-)

More critique on this blog system

I am not a fan of posting exact times on a weblog. I feel it invades my privacy too much. What do others think about "hiding" that feature and just having the day public?

Not that cut and dry

Even if I hid the times in the byline, there would still be ways to figure out what time you wrote your post. For example, RSS feed that goes out from the site will always have the time. So if someone really wanted to know, they could find out when you posted.

Other things to consider: times not only appear on blog items, but on comments as well. Do you suggest getting rid of the times there, too?

I could add some code to the site that hides just your time from view and keeps everyone elses. That adds its own complications. For example, people could deduce around which time you posted by looking at the times of the posts immediately before and after your own.

Overall, I'm relectant to take away site functionality to meet one person's needs. Unless there is a broad outpouring of support, I'm probably going to keep them.

If you want, go ahead and create a poll and get others feedback and opinion.

Used the new "Recent post" feature?

Have you tried the "Recent posts" feature at the top of the right-hand column? I find it much handier than the "Recent comments". And it's a good thing you said something because I was actually thinking about dropping the "Recent comments".

But let me know if "Recent posts" works for you and why you might prefer "Recent comments" instead.

I like the idea of adding who posted it and put that on my todo list. As far as the time, I like that because it shows that the site is active. From your comment below, you might have privacy concerns.

Privacy etc.

As far as the time stamp, I am not a fan of any weblog having exact time stamps (for anyone anywhere). Just don't like it, think it is [FeatureCreep] - what value does it add? Your thought about showing activity doesn't persuade me, 30 posts on a day shows that as well. My two cents. :-) I use recent posts, but like the recent comments as it shows immediately activity. Recent posts is ok... can it be streamed like recent comments?

Re: throwing the clocks out the window

Before I change anything, I still need clarification from you as to wheter or not you are looking to do away with timestamps on just blog post or are you looking to do away with timestamps on comments as well?

What do you mean when you say "can it be streamed?" I'm not sure what functionality you are referring to.

I'm willing to go a week without timestamps (at least on the blog entries) as an experiment and then take a poll to see if people miss them. My own personal preference is to keep them. As the administrator, they server a function of keeping me apprised of how many hours it's been since the new content has been posted. As you may have noticed, I'm very keen on the idea of fresh content on here. They also satisfy some geeky reptilian part of my brain for data. :) I'm not a time freak, either. I haven't worn a wrist watch in about 15 years.

Father Time

I think that any function of a recent comments or recent content works to show new fresh content.

I would like to see both weblog and comments be timestamp free. :-)

By streamed, I mean like recent comments. Currently recent content is one click away off the front page. I think having it "streamed" would mean there would be a list of 5-10 items and their authors (currently that is not on the recent content page, just creator) like recent comments is "streamed." Sorry, not sure how else to say it.

I don't care if someone wants to dig through and find out what time I posted, but I don't think it adds value to have it so front and center.

Taking timestamp off comments would be bad

Well, I don't have so much of a problem with taking it off blog entries, but taking it off comments I'd put up more of a stink about. That's because it can tell you who said what when. I can remember more than once (on another board) looking for a timestamp to see when someone posted to see if it came before or after another post in another thread.

I'm still willing to experiment and ditch them for a week. Then we'll ask to see if anyone missed them. I'll make a quick change to the template code this weekend.

Again Steve, I think you

Again Steve,

I think you are awesome just to entertain my ideas.
