FAQ about Communicate or Die
What's this site all about?
For a general answer, we direct your attention to "Idle Pens are not mightier than swords" essay, the site's very first post.
More specifically, there are three basic goals:
1) To explain to the labor movement, both at the grassroots and leadership levels, what opportunities the Internet affords and why we cannot afford to squander them.
2) To help the labor movement figure out what effective and efficient Internet tools are available to them and how to employ them.
3) To share ideas, resources, and news between members in order to help meet the above stated goals.
Who runs this site?
Right now, the site is run by Steve Dondley, who also founded it. Learn more about Steve. If you are looking for more information about him do a Google search and see if any skeletons fly out of your monitor.
Although Steve currently makes all editorial and technical decisions about the site, his intention is to gradually turn the day-to-day editorial and administrative tasks over to the community.
When was this site launched?
Technically, the site was up and running in the latter half of March '05. However, it received no attention by Steve until early June when he actively started building it. Interestingly, the project was almost completely forgotten about by Steve. But words of encouragement from the site's very first comment rekindled interest for him.
Nice site. How do I get one?
This site is powered by a free software program called Drupal. It is excellent software that fits the needs of the labor movement quite nicely. You can download the software absolutely free of charge here. If you need help setting up and using Drupal, post your question in our help forum.
Why can't anonymous users post comments?
Steve believes that trust, the foundation for all collaborative activity, requires non-anonymous communication. Also, by requiring users to register, it gives administrators the ability to block malicious users and link spammers from vandalizing our community.
Can't people just register with a fake name and remain anonymous anyway?
Yes. But most people understand the importance of using their real identities in a collaborative, professional environment. Although a handful may choose to hide their identity when posting to this site, it would be counterproductive to employ a complex identity verification system to try and stop them.

Stay Connected
Hi Steve,
1 -- Is there a way to subscribe to all the threads and forums so that my email address would receive a notice when someone posts?
2 -- If I used the rss could that accomplish the some result, staying connected to the updateing information?

Frustratingly No
Tony, I asked the same question, and no there isn't. Basically, you have to come to click on "all recent posts"
I had the experience of just thinking nothing was happening here, because I read through an rss feed. I showed up to post something one day and saw a bunch of comments and some other activitiy that I hoped to be apart of... aahhh, technology, gotta love it. :-)

After your reply, Mark, I
After your reply, Mark, I wrote to Drupal support, their reply follows, I also did a quick check of the number of forum catagories against the count of forum catagories in the navagation bar and both come to 20. So we might assume that the 'my subscribtion' list does reflect all and one can subscribe to all at that display ...
---------------------------------------------------
Assuming you have the subscriptions module installed, enabled, and
nothing important omitted, you can simply subscribe to broad content
types, categories, and threads at 'My Subscriptions'.

Hang tight
Tony, hang tight. The site will have a big overhaul soon. There will be lots of new features. I'm drowning in work right now and once I get through it, I'll give more love to this site. I promise.
Hanging Tight but not connected...
Hi Steve,
You've done a great job with this reborn CoD site layout. It is very much improved, easier on the eye as well as useability. Thanks, it is appreciated.
You recall that I asked Drupal Support and their reply was;
Assuming you have the subscriptions module installed, enabled, and nothing important omitted, you can simply subscribe to broad content types, categories, and threads at 'My Subscriptions'.http://site.com/?q=subscriptions
Hwever, I still can't find this method to subscribe to receive email notice when new material is posted to the site?
If this is this somewhere in this site, please let us know?
Does your CoD Drupal version even have this tech program capacity to push email to CoD site members?
IF NOT, Would you write a small script that links a Cod mailing listserve program to this sites CoD web form posting code script?
